An Unimportant Day was a seminal early work made in 2009, two years into the period of Savu's practice that would bring him sustained international recognition and, ultimately, the Romanian pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. Viewed from above and at distance, the scene is industrial: concrete perimeter walls, half-built warehouse units, a red and blue dump truck, mounds of earth and rubble. A single figure in a blue jacket stands in the middle of the compound, back to us, facing the buildings. The title is precise and deliberate. This is an unimportant day; nothing is happening that history will record. And yet the painting insists that it is worth looking at, that the man standing alone in the dirt between a truck and a wall is a subject, that the textures of post communist Romanian construction are a landscape with the same claim on painting as any other. The painting belongs to the body of work that established his signature subject matter, the quiet dignity of ordinary labor and leisure in the postcommunist landscape, before Westernization would begin to dissolve the communal rhythms of life he was documenting.
