Drawing off the Wall was made in 2011, the year before Murillo graduated from the Royal College of Art and the year the Rubell Family Collection in Miami first acquired his work, initiating the recognition that would bring him to David Zwirner in 2013 and the Turner Prize in 2019. Murillo's canvases were deliberately conceived as things that absorb their own making, they were worked on the ground and left to gather the material conditions of the studio around them. This canvas was no exception and was purchased unstretched directly from the floor of Francois Ghebaly gallery. The text of migrant commerce is layered onto the surface in oil stick and spray paint, the words of two economies side by side: Fritanga, Pollo in food-stall Spanish from the streets of London and New York; chicken spelled out in English alongside it. A work from this same series, Untitled (Drawings off the wall), set the artist's all-time auction record in September 2013. Acquired directly from the studio at this formative moment, this is one of the most important early canvases by one of the defining painters of his generation.
