AB/3246/U belongs to the body of intimate panel paintings that have made Biltereyst one of the most quietly rigorous abstract painters working in Europe today. The composition is sourced, as all his work is, from the visual language of the street: a logo, a marking, a graphic fragment glimpsed on a passing truck or roadside sign, photographed, rotated, reframed, and then slowly translated into acrylic on plywood. What arrives on the panel is never quite the source: the brushwork carries traces of earlier sessions, the blue shifts slightly from one pass to the next, the white bands show the texture of the panel beneath. The scale is deliberate; at under ten inches, the painting demands proximity, operating more like an icon than a statement. Mondrian and De Stijl are present as ancestors, but Biltereyst's work is rooted in the world as it actually looks: the functional beauty of things not made to be art, temporarily freed from their original purpose and allowed to be simply themselves.
