Architecton Alpha belongs to the body of intimate, densely worked paintings that consolidated Smith's international reputation following her inclusion in the exhibitions that first brought her critical attention and her subsequent representation by Hauser & Wirth. Working at a scale barely larger than a sheet of paper, Smith compresses an extraordinary density of surface incident into a format that demands close looking. The title invokes Kazimir Malevich's Architectons - his pure architectural sculptures of the 1920s - but Smith subjects that geometric severity to the lush, obsessive layering that defines her practice: fur, feathers, insects, foliage, and textile patterns accumulate until the surface becomes something between a painting and an ecosystem. Producing fewer than ten works a year, each canvas is the result of an extended and deliberate process; at this scale, every square centimetre carries weight. The work is characteristic of Smith at her most concentrated.
