Headdress 57 belongs to Metaferia's signature series: large-scale mixed-media collages in which she photographs BIPOC women and femmes, then crowns them with elaborate headdresses constructed from archival protest imagery, Black liberation ephemera, and historical documents. The figure here wears a jacket lettered Stop Killing Black People / Defund Police / Abolish ICE, and her head is encircled with circled details from news photographs and political archives. Scattered across the ground below her, painted circles echo the accents in the collage above, connecting the figure to the space she inhabits. At eight by four feet, the work operates at the scale of a person, making its subject impossible to diminish. Metaferia has described the Headdress series as a form of crown-making: a ritual of adornment through which collective struggle is transformed into something worn, something carried, something passed on. The series was the subject of her solo exhibition Generations at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2021–22) and is now held in the collections of LACMA, the MFA Boston, and the RISD Museum, among others. Headdress 57 was made at the height of Metaferia's critical recognition, the same year her work was included in the Sharjah Biennial.
