Bread Figure (Reclining) belongs to one of the most sustained and conceptually rich series in Johnson's practice. Working in carved and painted wood, he constructs human figures entirely from bread forms: a boule becomes the head, scored with a crosshatch that reads simultaneously as the baker's mark and as a face; a whole wheat loaf forms the torso; baguettes serve as limbs. The figure here reclines with one leg dangling off the edge of its plinth, relaxed and slightly absurd, the bread forms rendered in trompe l'oeil with such precision that the wood convincingly mimics the crust, crumb, and color of freshly baked bread. Johnson has described the conceptual logic of the series as touching on material metamorphosis, transubstantiation, and the ancient equation of bread with the human body. In this reclining pose, the work also invokes the odalisque and the reclining nude as one of sculpture's most canonical postures, here rendered entirely in dough. The effect is simultaneously comic and serious, which is the precise register Johnson occupies across his practice.
