About
Since it opened in 2011, Marc Straus gallery has garnered international attention for discovering and fostering new talent, and for its focus on artists who have been overlooked. As the first to bring Jeffrey Gibson's work to market in 2012, the gallery has provided a platform for exceptional talent and potential that may have been previously dismissed or ignored by the market at large. Following her first exhibit at the gallery in 2021, Anne Samat has had five solo museum shows. Other artists, such as Hermann Nitsch and Sandro Chia, found new audiences and attention after gallery exhibitions. Marc Straus gallery currently maintains a diverse roster of over 25 contemporary artists spanning 18 nations and widely differing perspectives.Marc Straus gallery artists have had works acquired by over 80 international museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Canada, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Denver Art Museum, The Smithsonian Institute, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MoMA, The Guggenheim, The Carnegie Museum of Art, Tate Gallery, Musée Centre George Pompidou, Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Gallery artists are included in important exhibitions and biennials worldwide, including the Venice, Prague, Sharjah, Kochi, and Gwangju Biennials, Prospect New Orleans, Site Santa Fe, and the Asia Society Triennial.
The eponymous founder, Marc Straus, is largely influenced by his many years as a collector of contemporary art, supporting markets at the early stages of artists' careers. His collection has had 13 museum exhibits. A poet and writer, Straus was formerly Professor of Medicine and Chair of Oncology at New York Medical College, and practiced medical oncology for 35 years. He and his wife Livia founded Hudson Valley MOCA in 2002.
