In Search of Liberty: Group Show

12 April - 24 May 2024
Press Release

MARC STRAUS is pleased to present In Search of Liberty, a group show of gallery artists, including Abdulnasser Gharem, Chris Jones, Entang Wiharso, Jeanne Silverthorne, Marie Watt, Michael Brown, Thomas Bangsted and others.

In Search of Liberty is the title of Chris Jones’ 2016 sculpture of a full-size motorcycle, made from glossy magazine pages and archival glue. It radiates the feeling of riding with the wind against one’s face, of the bright sun and the open road. The rider is fully aware of the risks of riding a motorcycle, but then too there is the undeniable, exhilarating sense of freedom.

Abdulnasser Gharem’s Concrete Block V which reroutes Chris Jone’s titular sculpture appears to be a concrete road barricade. Up close it is covered in thousands of tiny rubber printer’s letters with sayings in English and Arabic, suggesting the barrier is also a device for keeping “others” out.

Michael Brown’s In the Meantime…II reflects its neighboring sculptures, presenting an alternate, distorted view. The patterning of a cracked mirror is replicated and the artwork is meticulously made with laser welded steel. Marie Watt’s neon Shared Horizon (Keepers of the Eastern Door) bathes the show in the multi-colored light of a sunrise, evoking the sensation of a new day with vibrance on the horizon.

In Search of Liberty is open on the first floor of the gallery through May 24, 2024. Gallery hours are 11 AM – 6 PM, Tuesday through Sunday.
